The MOVE to Kentucky

KENTUCKY or BUST

It is SAID in the FAMILY that a VIRES travelled over the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky. We know that GIDEON VIA travelled with Boone on an Expedition to the Southeren Colonies during the REVOLUTION. While so far it hasn't been Proven or Disproven that a VIA/VIRES travelled across with ole Daniel it makes for one HECK of a TALE. I like to think that GIDEON did make the trip and that upon his return to "CIVILIZATION" he regalled his Nephews of "Tales of the Untamed West". Gideon was the son of John Via and Mary Powhatan.

These were WILD Times. The Threat of Indian Attack made a man an EXPERT MARKSMAN if he wanted to survive. These Men were a ROUGH, RUGGED, and INDEPENDENT Breed. They were family Men and they taught their children to rely on no one but their Family.
It is Estimated that 70% of the Post Revolutionary Settlers FAILED.

Alot of People have the MISTAKEN Assumption that the Early Settlers of Kentucky and the Midwest States of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin were POOR Citizens. WRONG, while there were some POOR Men and Women who ATTEMPTED to Settle these Areas, for the MOST PART these PEOPLE were Strongly in the MIDDLE CLASS. Moving to the Wilderness Areas was an EXPENSIVE Undertaking. These People were in Search of a CHALLENGE. They were in Search for a little EXTRA ROOM to Raise their families on. The Average Farmer in VA Owned about 50 Acres or so. According to Deed Records DAVID VIA JR., aka DAVID VIRES, owned around 400 Acres of land in and around Franklin County VA. Sometime between 1819 and 1820 he SOLD ALL of his LAND in VA and Struck Out to claim some of the LANDS in Kentucky. We know this because his Daughter, Polly, was born in 1819 in Franklin Co. VA. David and Company show up in the 1820 Census in Clay County Kentucky. The part of Clay County they lived in Eventually became Breathitt County Kentucky.

David's son, Moses, followed his Forebears into being a Farmer. he married Denicia "NICEY" Hollon October 19, 1835. Though his Brothers Fleming, David, and Randall also settled in the Area. The Majority of the Breathitt, Perry, Owsley, Wolfe, and Magoffin County VIRES are Descendents of Moses and Nicey. Also around this time Elizabeth Jane Vires married Elisha Milton Terry thus continueing a trend from the Colonial Period. Intermarriage into as many Prominent Families as possible. Like their VIA Cousins a few generations before THESE VIRES YOUNG LADIES MARRIED WELL.These Families include the TERRY'S, JOHNSON'S, KING'S, McINTOSH'S, WATKINS, SPICER'S...... Just about every Major Family in Eastern KY; "Like Flies"....
